The Healthy Conversation Series

“Daddy Why Am I Brown?” is meant to be a starter conversation on how kids can learn to talk about skin color in a way that is kind, thoughtful, and healthy. And in the process, they learn a little bit about how to understand the difference between race, ethnicity, and culture.
Black Joy: A Healthy Conversation About Race directly addresses the concept of race, explaining the origin of race, the social rationale for creating race and for the redefinition of Blackness from being an indicator of oppression to being an indicator of strength and resilience.

About The Author

Bedford Palmer II, Ph.D.
Dr. Bedford Palmer is a licensed psychologist and a Professor at Saint Mary’s College of California. He holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and researches issues related to social justice and cultural factors. Dr. Palmer is the founder and CEO of Deeper Than Color, a group private practice in Oakland, California, where he and his team work with a diverse clientele and provide multicultural competence training to individuals and organizations. He has ten nieces and nephews and a great many little cousins. Dr. Palmer is a self-described huge nerd, who loves sci-fi, anime, and fantasy. He is happily married to the most amazing woman that he has ever met, and he has two dogs that are definitely smarter and cuter than yours (at least in his eyes).
